Greater Bargoed Community Regeneration Scheme (CRS) Client: Caerphilly County Borough Council Contractors Designers: Capita Symonds Form of Contract: ECC Option C Dates work carried out: 2006 - 2009 Value: £25,000,000 A 3.2 kilometre single carriageway trunk road with four new interchanges is under construction along the centre of the Rhymney Valley in South Wales. Working in partnership with the client’s designers, the Project Team is providing construction planning support. A project with real community benefits, key stakeholder relationships are being forged with local residents and businesses, Network Rail, the Environment Agency and Utilities companies to ensure the project progresses smoothly. Following the river valley floor between the communities of Bargoed and Gilfach to the west and Aberbargoed to the east the scheme includes re-alignment of the A469. Angel Way, 2.2 kilometres of single 7.3 metre carriageway with one-metre hard strips, will be connected via 7.3 metre wide cross valley link roads. The route of the scheme, through the Bargoed Country Park, requires a sensitive approach to the environment, with recent translocation of amphibians, undertaken in cooperation with the project team’s ecologists. Early design input from HOCHTIEF has allowed re-engineering of three structures to improve the scheme outcomes, with the re-design of one providing real benefits at an early stage of the project. Crossing the River Rhymney, cofferdams were originally intended to allow construction close to the riverbank. An alternative, 2m diameter piles on each bank to form new piers have given savings in time, cost and environmental impact. |
