Stratford Station DLR Client: Docklands Light Railway Ltd Contractors Designers: Tony Gee & Partners Form of Contract: I.C.E Design and Construct with amendments Dates work carried out: 2003 - 2006 Value: £12,000,000 At the gateway to the Olympics HOCHTIEF delivered a stunning Alsop-architects designed landmark structure fit for 2012. On a constricted site enclosed by rail, road and underground improved facilities have been installed for one of DLR’s oldest, congested stations including longer, covered platforms and passenger link bridges. DLR’s existing terminal station at Stratford in East London was a single, narrow, congested, uncovered platform sandwiched between the adjacent London Underground Central Line platform and a Network Rail platform. With the regeneration of this part of London and the 2012 Olympic Park close by the client required a high specification product to a high architectural finish. Key requirements were:
The site, a small, narrow triangle of Network Rail land, is adjacent to and enclosed by the London Underground Central Line, the Jubilee Line and a public highway. A key element of this design and construct scheme was obtaining approval of the design from Docklands Light Railway, London Underground and Network Rail. Approval of working methods was also essential from the three parties requiring commensurate skills in planning and coordination. The principal construction involved piled foundations, RC retaining walls, RC pilecaps and columns, and contiguous piled walls. For the rail side, RC 150m long twin viaducts support the track and platform slabs, with a structural steelwork platform canopy, link-bridge, footbridge and staircases. Completing the works included ceiling and roof cladding, track works, platform finishes, M&E and communications fit out. |
