Holmthorpe Underbridge, Surrey

Client: Linden Homes

Engineers: Tony Gee & Partners

Form of Contract: ECC Option A

Dates work carried out: 2004 - 2005

Value: £3,000,000

In order that a brown field site on the edge of Redhill could be redeveloped, a new access road had to be constructed through an existing rail embankment.

An innovative design approach to enable installation of a new structure with significant time constraints.

Close liaison with Network Rail ensured we completed the design approval and construction in less than 9 months. The new underbridge was installed during 10 4-hour possessions under a Design & Build contract.

In order to meet the tight time constraints the bridge was designed as an integral structure of abutments, deck and wing walls, which could be constructed and positioned in one operation once the embankment, had been removed.

The 1800-ton structure was transported on four rows of self propelled mobile transporters, before reinstating the embankment with specially blended backfill.

To enable the embankment excavation the traction power cables were diverted prior to the main possession, signal & telecommunication cables were suspended across the excavation from a temporary Mave Bridge.

HOCHTIEF responsibility on the project covered total delivery of the structure, from the strategy to logistics involved. The total solution for the bridge construction was provided, from design to installation involving all aspects of the Rail Network, Permanent Way, Traction Power and Signalling.

The project was successfully completed in an environmentally sensitive urban area in close proximity to residential housing and with minimal disruption to local businesses.
