Engineer: Posford Duvivier

Form of Contract: Railtrack RT/16

Dates work carried out: 1997 - 1999

Holywell Road Bridge forms part of the Chippenham Western Bypass, providing the final link under the railway (London to Bristol line) connecting the A350 with the A4.

The Bridge consists of a reinforced concrete two bay portal, weighing approx. 3,300t, built on the South side of the railway parallel to the track with two equal spans of 13.5m and an overall length of 24m with a skew of 17.5 degrees.

Temporary foundations were cast alongside the railway with permanent foundations construction within 3 No. 3.66m diameter x 44m long tunnels driven through the embankment.

Continuous slide track linked the temporary and permanent foundations, allowing the portal structure to be slid into position during a 72 hr. possession of the railway over 25-27th December.
